NEW YORK—The Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors, the Long Island Board of Realtors and the Staten Island Board of Realtors jointly staged the first New York City Lobby Day on Oct. 23.
Realtors from the three associations met with City Council members and/or staff at City Council member offices at 250 Broadway in Manhattan. HGAR’s Director of Government Affairs Alexander Roithmayr explained that the event was meant to introduce the associations formally to Council members and to promote the associations’ steadfast belief in cooperative transparency.
Roithmayr explained the New York City program was fashioned similarly to the annual Lobby Day in Albany and that based on the feedback from Realtors and Council members and staff, New York City Lobby Day will return sometime in 2025.
HGAR members, led by Roithmayr and Eliezer Rodriguez, Esq., Regional Director of Government Affairs for HGAR, held five separate meetings with City Council members and staff and discussed HGAR’s support of a pending bill authored by City Council Majority Leader Amanda Faris that would close a glaring loophole in the city’s fair housing regulations.
The bill, if approved, would require co-op boards to take up and consider all properly submitted applications within a fair period of 90 days; provide a letter of reason for denial to all applicants and file a copy of a letter detailing the reason for denial with the New York City Commission on Human Rights for both proper monitoring and reporting on possible fair housing violations.
The counties of Westchester, Rockland and Suffolk currently have similar legislation on their books.
“The first New York City Lobby Day was great. First and foremost, I want to thank our members who traveled to Manhattan and made it so successful,” said Roithmayr. “We met with City Council members and staff and had very rewarding meetings.” He added that the event was geared to introducing City Council members to the Realtor associations and to discuss fair housing issues.
“It was an event we hope to build off of and I can’t wait to do it again in 2025,” he said.
The HGAR participants at the 2024 New York City Lobby Day were: Teresa Belmore, Ernest Chi, Soleil Jackman, Brian Phillips, Christina Stevens, Shanese Williams, Tony D’Anzica and Layla Boyles.
HGAR Director of Member Engagement Amy DelliPaoli assisted in organizing the NYC Lobby Day program.
