Long-Time HGAR Affiliate Member Allan Block Insurance Celebrates 65 Years in Business

TARRYTOWN—Based here, the Allan Block Insurance recently celebrated a milestone anniversary with 65 years in business. The company traces its roots back to 1959 when Allan Block embarked on his journey selling insurance door-to-door in Tarrytown.

Despite facing challenges due to childhood polio, Block's determination kept him going and eventually led to a path of success. His inaugural office, above Harnik Bros. Jewelers, was later expanded with the purchase of 24 South Broadway in 1974.

Block passed in 1981, but his wife, Barbara, continued his legacy.

Under her guidance, the agency thrived and expanded further with the acquisition of 20 South Broadway in 1984. Ed Schultz and JoAnne Murray then took over the company’s leadership roles.

Today, Murray leads a dedicated team, recognized for their expertise and commitment to giving back to the local community. The firm was recognized as the Best of Westchester's “Best Insurance Agency” in 2018 and 914 INC.'s “Best in Business Insurance” in 2019, 2021 and 2022. Hanover Insurance Company named them “Regional Agent of the Year” in 2023, followed by Traveler's Insurance Company's acknowledgment as Agent of the Year in 2024.

The agency has also received recognition from local organizations such as the Tarrytown Sleepy Hollow Historical Society, Elizabeth Mascia Child Care Center, The Salvation Army, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Rotary Club.  In addition, they were named as the HGAR “Affiliate of the Year” in 2016.

In addition to Murray, the executive team includes Vice Presidents Laura Murray-Faggella and Neil Bush, along with Operations Manager Stephanie Casey and Bookkeeper George Moore.
