NAR Approves Comprehensive Updates to Modernize MLS Handbook
The recommendations, which constitute the most extensive update to the MLS Handbook in 20 years, will be reflected in the 2026 MLS Handbook, scheduled to be published in January 2026.
By executing the Strategic Plan, NAR will modernize the association, deliver greater member value, respond to an evolving industry landscape, and provide transparent metrics to hold the association accountable.
HOUSTON—The National Association of Realtors announced on Sunday (Nov. 16) that it had adopted its 2026-2028 Strategic Plan after it was approved unanimously by the NAR Executive Committee. The plan is being touted as “the largest transformation in real estate history.”
NAR officials stated the new strategic plan is grounded in industry insights and shaped by outreach to more than 150,000 voices across each level of the association and the industry. It provides a roadmap that will modernize the organization and transform the member experience. The plan will be implemented on Jan. 1, 2026.
“NAR is rebuilding trust by executing the largest transformation in real estate history, and this Strategic Plan will be our roadmap,” said NAR CEO Nykia Wright. “The plan is data-informed to ensure that NAR is investing in initiatives that members and the industry find most valuable. It also includes success metrics so our members and the industry can hold NAR accountable to the commitments we are making.”
Wright, appearing at HGAR’s “Impact: The Member Experience” event on Sept. 29 in White Plains, previewed the new Strategic Plan and described how the National Association of Realtors has emerged from a tumultuous period of scandal and litigation to focus on providing key services and information to its membership.
NAR’s Wright stressed at the HGAR event her strong commitment to the association’s mantra of “helping Realtors get to the next transaction.”
NAR officials noted that by executing the Strategic Plan, NAR will modernize the association, deliver greater member value, respond to an evolving industry landscape, and provide transparent metrics to hold the association accountable. The three-year plan is the product of listening to members and industry stakeholders. Based on what NAR heard from members, the association identified the 24 initiatives members would find most valuable to their membership experience. Those 24 initiatives are how NAR will fulfill the commitments the association is making to members, partners, industry and consumers.
Position the Realtor brand as a trusted symbol of expertise, integrity and reliable service for consumers.
Included in its Strategic plan is NAR’s Value Commitment for 2026-2028, which states: “NAR empowers Realtors by helping them thrive in their businesses. It achieves this goal by advocating on their behalf, providing market intelligence and research tools, offering professional development and education, maintaining high standards and elevating the Realtor brand. By supporting Realtors, NAR protects and advances the right of Americans to own real estate.”
